Cinematic artwork

Quentin Tarantino’s latest movie is a cinematographic love letter to the Hollywood of the 60s. In this self-reflexive tale, we’re met with reality-inspired characters such as Sharon Tate, along with other, more fictional ones, like Rick Dalton or Cliff Booth. Throughout the film, Tarantino makes an art of weaving the new and the old, the real and the fictional.

Among the numerous artworks displayed, there’s Picasso’s Portrait de Sylvette (1954) and Jacqueline aux fleurs (1954). Godard strategically places these two left-facing artworks side by side, with Pierrot looking in the opposite direction… In cinematographic fashion, Godard creates art from art, relying on Picasso’s work to compose his own masterful frames.

Through this exploration, we aim to highlight the innovative and enduring connection between film and painting, showcasing how cinematic techniques continue to inspire and elevate the art of painting.

The fifth vignette in Kurosawa’s film has fellow director Martin Scorcese refining his Queens accent to portray Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh. We experience this segment through the daydream of an aspiring artist who finds the great painter sketching at his easel in a wheat field. After explaining how he came to lose his ear, Van Gogh tells of his urgent need to paint as much as possible before the daylight fades.

Cinematic framing involves the strategic arrangement of elements within a scene to direct the viewer’s attention and enhance the narrative. Painters have adopted this technique to create a sense of movement and story within their static compositions. By using techniques such as close-ups, wide shots, and off-center framing, artists can evoke the feeling of a film still, drawing the viewer into the scene and encouraging them to imagine the unfolding narrative.

The 1980s also had a number of huge box office smash hits in the Sci-Fi genre – such as E.T., Back to The Future, and Blade Runner – which was reflected in design via gradients, chunky text effects, and cosmic 80s fonts. We’re seeing this sci-fi style reemerge in the present day with a nostalgic nod to the decade, as seen in this AKQA Illustration by Romain Billaud.

Art Deco is famous for using polished, mirrored, or golden metallic textures paired with black or silver.
